CARE: The Extra Mile — Be the Champion

  • Cheerlead—Be their champion, be a source of optimism and inspiration

    • Helps coachee feel like what they want to do is possible

    • Sounds like: “You can do this,” “I know you’ll figure it out,” “I know you can find a fulfilling role or project that will support your growth”

  • Acknowledge—Specific skills, who they are

    • Helps coachee feel “seen” for who they are as a unique individual

    • Sounds like: “I can tell you are very smart, motivated and passionate about your work,” “It’s inspiring to hear you talk about what’s possible for Google in terms of philanthropy”

  • Relate / Empathize—Be authentic (don’t have to force this)

    • Helps coachee feel less alone, less “crazy”; they can see that others have gone through this and come out the other side

    • Sounds like: “I get it,” “I’ve been there,” “I know this is hard,” “I can see why you’re frustrated”

  • Empower —Let them be the expert, session outcome is theirs to own

    • Helps coachee feel like the answers are within; they are completely resourceful and able to figure this out; encourages them to take charge

    • Sounds like: “I’d be happy to share my experience / opinions at the end, but first: what do you think?”, “What does your gut say?” “If you could channel Larry (or a leader they admire) what would he or she advise you to do?”
